A promising career has had to be temporarily put on hold after a routine scan revealed a heart defect in Rams sixteen year-old defender Mark O'Brien.

The youngster had no idea he had the condition and his only symptom was a high heart rate during training. The scan that revealed the problem was routine and undergone by every player at the Academy.

The scan revealed that Mark had a problem with the valves of his heart and he was advised to have immediate surgery to cure the problem.

Mark underwent the surgery at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital and he will have to recuperate for around three to four months.

The career of Mark was progressing before the scan and he made his first team debut during last seasons final game against Watford.

It is hoped that Mark will be back in action in the New Year and the operation should not cause any future problems and Mark hopes to build on his U16 player of the Year award from last season. He has already been back to see his fellow Academy students at Moor Farm, just a few days after the operation...
