Fans review of the pre-season friendly at Burton
Stuart Hughes gives us his opinions and rating of Derby County players in the first pre-season friendly with Burton Albion.

Typical first pre-season practice game.

Stephen Bywater [6] - not much to do really, looked competent

Paul Connolly [6] - solid game, untroubled at the back, didn't really get forward

Dean Leacock [7] - impressive return from injury, Burton tended to attack through the middle and Greg Pearson and Richard Walker didn't trouble him

Patrick Kisnorbo [8] - very impressive in his second game in two days, gave away an early free-kick but after that was dominant, won everything in the air, organised the defence, tidy on the ball with both feet, and looks a goal scoring threat at corners

Lewin Nyatanga [6] - not sure left-back is really his position, solid enough and tried to get forward in support of Moxey

Lee Croft [6] - showed glimpses of ability, has some neat tricks, but never really got the better of Paul Boertien

Robbie Savage [7] - battling and committed display, no fitness concerns on this showing

Mark Fotheringham [7] - neat and tidy player, always involved, always talking, linked play well and had a couple of good shots from just outside the penalty area

Dean Moxey [6] - looked like a left-back playing in left midfield to be honest, a nice first touch, but didn't take on the full-back and his crossing needs work

Giles Barnes [6] - up front isn't his best position, his pace twice got him clean through but blasted high once, and then wide, faded as the half went on

Chris Porter [6] - scored the goal well but wasn't really involved enough for my liking

-----

Saul Deeney [5] - not really troubled but looked indecisive at times and his indecision nearly gifted the brewers an equaliser

Jason Beardsley [5] - good tackler, who likes to get forward. May have a future but made a few mistakes in this game

Jake Buxton [7] - obviously knows the Brewers well but looked unflappable at the back and tidied up all the scraps and bits and pieces well

Miles Addison [6] - a solid return from injury

Jay McEveley [5] - never really got into the game and gave away a needless corner

Steve Davies [6] - saw plenty of the ball and got some good crosses in but was a bit hot and cold

Paul Green [6] - good to see him back, worked tirelessly but with little end product

Stephen Pearson [5] - somewhat rusty, good engine but tended to overrun the ball and lost possession a lot

Gary Teale [7] - got into the game more as Burton tired. Worked hard down the wing, got in some useful crosses, and had two good chances when pushed up front late in the game

Liam Dickinson [7] - worked hard, had a few chances, looked to have improved since I last saw him but still needed too much time in the penalty area

Luke Varney [6] - looked lively and was unlucky not to score with a header

Ben Pringle [n/a] - some tidy touches but not really on the pitch long enough...
