Derby County 1 Wigan Athletic 1

Derby County could not mark the memory of Brian Clough with a victory and were fortunate to finish with a point as Championship leaders Wigan Athletic had an off day.

Before the game a 26,000 plus crowd had stood in silence following the death of Derby's greatest manager on Monday and past players had brought out the league championship trophy won under Clough in the seventies as a tribute.

The game did not live up to the occasion and it was Wigan who played the sort of football that Clough would have appreciated.

But for once Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts could not hit the target and Derby hang on to take a fortuitous point.

The home side had unveiled their most recent signing, Polish international Grzegorz Rasiak and the 25-year-old showed some neat touches without ever having a clear chance in the 90 minutes.

It was a different story when Wigan attacked and Ellington, who once scored a hat-trick for Bristol Rovers at Derby in the FA Cup, was guilty of wasting three excellent chances.

And yet it was Derby who went in front when Rasiak flicked on a long throw from Adam Bolder and Tommy Smith placed a header from eight yards inside Filan's right-hand post.

But within two minutes Derby had thrown the lead away with Inigo Idiakez losing possession to the excellent Jimmy Bullard, who put Lee McCulloch in for a low right-foot finish from 15 yards.

Idiakez had one of his poorest games for Derby who were overrun in midfield but Ellington and Roberts could not make Wigan's superiority count.

The second half was not as one-sided, but Ellington was superbly denied by Lee Camp in the 48th minute and then dragged another shot wide in the 64th minute.

Derby skipper Ian Taylor had a header tripped over, but it was a rare chance for the Rams as Wigan continued to look the better side.

But they finished the game with ten men after McCulloch was shown a second yellow card when he crudely charged into Taylor three minutes from the end of normal time.

Derby sensed this might be their cue to steal all three points and in stoppage time Mo Konjic had a header saved by Filan, but Derby were probably relieved to leave the pitch with a share of the spoils.
