I have chosen Walter Urban Musson or “Chick” as he was always known to remember this week. Many of you younger readers will not know about Chick Musson. I personally do because he was born in Kilburn, Derbyshire and although 4 years younger my mother went to school at the same time as Chick.

Joining Derby County in March 1936, Chick was only 15 when he signed amateur forms for the club. Players could not sign professionally until they had reached the age of 17 and on his 17th birthday, October 8th 1937 Chick signed professional for the Rams.

Playing left half; Musson was feared by many of his opponents for his ferocious tackling and was rightly considered one of the hardest tacklers in the game at that time. Not bad for a man who was little more than 5ft-8 inches tall

Chick was a part of the Derby County 1946 FA Cup winning side. The only time the Rams have won the trophy.

Although Chick didn't gain any international caps for England he did represent the Football League against the Irish league in 1950.

Derby County was the only professional side Chick Musson played for. After leaving Derby County in June 1954 he became player manager of Brush Sports in the Birmingham League. Only ten months later Chick Musson died of leukaemia at the tender age of only 34.
