Rams remembered... Bert Mozley

Bert Mozley

Today we look back at the life and playing career of one of my favourite players of the past.

I have actually had the pleasure of meeting Bert Mozley and a more pleasant a person you could not wish to meet.

Bert Mozley and friends
Bert Mozley (second from right) and Sir Stanley Mathews (3rd from left)
Bert was born in Chester Green, Derby on 23rd September 1923. The local lad had a trial with Derby County in 1944. He was offered amateur forms after the game, which took place on Darley Fields (a place often played upon now by Ramsnet FC, the Rams internet supporters club).

Bert was taken on a professional contract in September 1945. He was also married to Jean the day after turning pro.

Bert Mozley played 321 times for Derby County and is as fit now at 78 as he was then. Working out everyday is what keeps Bert so active; it may also have been his decision to move to Canada in the 1950,s that has kept Bert so sprightly

Bert was unlucky to have only played 3 times for England. Injury robbed him of his place in 1950 and his place was taken over, not by a world famous player but a world famous manager. Sir Alf Ramsey was the man, who later went on to manage the 1966 world cup winning England side.

Another world famous player was a close friend of Bert and Jean was Sir Stanley Mathews and as you can see is in the picture that accompanies this article Sir Stan loved every minute of his trips to see the Mozleys. Many thanks to Bert who sent me the picture just a few weeks ago.
