RAICH CARTER

To start the series off we take a look at Raich Carter or to give him his proper name Horatio Stratton Carter.

Raich Carter had won everything there was to win in domestic English soccer by the time he was 24. Born in Sunderland in 1913 Carter started his career with Sunderland as an amateur in 1930, signing professional for the Black Cats a year later.

Carter signed for Derby County in 1945 after guesting for the Rams during the war years as he was posted to RAF Loughborough for the duration. The fee of £6,000 paid for Carter was given a tongue in cheek comment by the man himself, he said “Sunderland where silly to let me go for that”.

A record of 34 goals in 63 appearances for the Rams made him one of the legends of the Baseball Ground in only three years that he was at the club.
