Transfers-Reading between the lines

Billy Davies
I want six players
Yet again there has come confusing statements from Pride Park. We heard yesterday that manager Billy Davies is wanting six new players to try and build a team that can compete at Premiership level. On the other hand there was a report in a leading newspaper that has Adam Pearson, new Rams Chairman, saying that there will be no large sums of money for transfers in January.

Confused? Well it does take some reading between the lines but it now seems inevitable that Derby County, its Chairman and Manager are focused on building a team for next season rather than trying to save their status in the Premiership.

Adam Pearson
Six players you can have but not sure how much you can spend yet
Six players of Premiership quality would mean spending in excess of £20m and that clearly isn't going to happen as the Chairman says we have to be realistic and hopefully will not end up in the position we were in some 18 months ago.

So what about the investors apparently being tracked by Pearson. How much are they going to put into a club that is heading at a rapid rate of knots toward the second tier of English football?
£50 million has been mentioned but is Derby County an attractive enough proposition for that amount of investment and do we have the ambition to keep Derby County as one of the top 20 clubs in the country and retain the interest of any potential investor?

It's a dilemma and one that I am pleased does not fall on my shoulders. Hopefully a compromise will be found and enough money and quality players will be found to at least give the paying public and loyal Rams fans something to watch in the second half of the season rather than hiding behind their hands and having the stigma of being fans of the worst ever Premiership team...
