Clough and Pearson
Was the spark last night the arrival of Nigel Clough, seen here being welcomed to the club by Chairman of football Adam Pearson
Derby County surprised and finally shut some of the football pundits up last night with a well deserved win against current World Club Champions Manchester United.

To be fair to the people who love to put Derby down at every opportunity, even die hard Rams fans didn't expect more than a two or three goal loss last night.

Was the spark the arrival of Nigel Clough, or did the Derby County players want to show the football world that they are good players . Maybe it was the pre-match interview with Clough, who takes over officially as manager today, that sparked a few of the players into action. Clough has promised to reduce the size of the squad at Derby, something his predecessor Paul Jewell also promised but failed to do.

Cloughie knows quality when he sees it and every man last night was doing his best to ensure a place in the new regime. Forgotten players Andy Todd and Mo Camara, stepped into the breach and produced a very acceptable display.

It has to be said that master tactician Sir Alex Ferguson made a big mistake by playing some of the 'lesser' players at Manchester United for this game and it was good to see the Rams forcing the arrival of Ronaldo, Rooney on the hour mark, but try as they might they couldn't stop a memorable win for the Rams. Just a shame now we have to do it all again on Tuesday 20th January, which incidentally is Steve Bloomers Birthday, so lets hope we can give him a present to remember...
