New Rams midfielder Bob Malcolm could be out of footballing action until the end of January following his operation to remove a piece of floating bone from his right ankle.

Rams officials had hoped to avoid surgery but the injury didn't settle down after Malcolm had the injury immobilised . Surgery was the only way to clear up the matter and now Malcolm will start the long road to recovery.

The blow to Malcolm and the club came at a time when the ex-Rangers midfielder was just starting to find his way in the Championship and cement his place in the Rams starting line-up.

Rams officials now see the FA Cup 4th round at the end of January 2007 as a target to get Malcolm back into the side.
