At 1-42pm today Wednesday 30th January 2002 John Charles Gregory was announced as the new manager of Derby County. The announcement was made in a press conference at Pride Park.

Gregory was born in Scunthorpe on the 11th May 1954; his playing career includes time playing at Northampton Town, Aston Villa, Queens Park Rangers and of course his 3-year spell with Derby County. One of the most respected managers in the Premiership, Gregory will be a major coup for the club and hopefully can turn the tide and keep the Rams in the Premiership.

Gregory states that he is very pleased to have joined the club and that the director's ambitions for the club matched his own.

He hopes to arrest the decline that has overtaken the club and will endeavour to take it in a new direction.

Asked what he thought of the club at the moment he said that it was a tough challenge but looking forward to it.

John was also impressed with the proposed Academy that is to be built near the club.

With a game coming up at Pride Park at the weekend Gregory was going to see the playing squad directly after the press conference. Asked if he had any money to spend on new players he answered that all Premiership clubs are now selling clubs, including Manchester United and he would have to wheel and deal in the market if he wanted to change the players he had at the moment.

At the end of the conference Gregory expressed his thanks to Aston Villa and said that there were not any hard feelings between himself and the Directors at Villa Park, this included Chairman Doug Ellis.

Everyone at Derby County Mad wishes JOHN GREGORY the very best of luck as he starts his reign as Rams supremo.
