Derby County striker Steven Davies says his hard work has been justified after he scored on his return to the Rams side in Saturday's draw at Portsmouth. The 23-year-old, who injured his knee in pre-season, made his first start of the season at Fratton Park.

Davies told BBC Radio Derby: "It was nice to be back playing and the goal was an extra bonus.

"If the goals come I will be absolutely made up but the main thing is to make sure my name is on the team sheet."

Davies has made six substitute appearances in the last month, but was promoted to the starting line-up to play along side Tomasz Cywka.

"If you ask anyone around the place, for two years I think have worked harder than anyone to get in the team," added Davies.

"Every time I have managed to [get in the side], something else has unfortunately gone wrong.

"I have worked extremely hard over the last six or seven months to get myself into a situation where I can start.

"I know we have only got a point but it's a good start, but to concede a late goal is a real sickener."
