Derby Businesses to fund Pride Park upgrade

Some businesses in Derby are angry at plans to impose an extra business tax on them in a bid to finance a £26m upgrade of Pride Park Stadium.

The money will in a bid to upgrade the stadium to put in with a chance of being one of the 12 cities chosen to host the 2018 World Cup finals.

No decision has been made on which country will get the football World Cup in 2018 but the decision will be made in just over a years time in December 2010 and it is expected that England will be give the tournament

The £26m upgrade to the stadium would take the capacity up to 38,000. This is an increase of four and a half thousand on the present capacity. The increase in capacity will aide the Rams in their bid to be one of the venues for the games, they are currently vying for the honour with Nottingham Forest and Leicester City

Local bosses and unsure of any benefit the World Cup would bring to their businesses but City Council officials say the World Cup is a great opportunity for the City and its businesses, should the actual tournament come to the country...
