Barker had been away from league football since 2012, when he ruptured both the Anertior and posterior ligaments in his right knee in a game against arch rivals Nottingham Forest.

Years of operations and re-habilitation work followed for the Rams central defender but in 2015 he left Derby County without ever taking to the field for them in a league game again.

Former Rams boss Nigel Clough saw the possibility of bringing Barke to the Pirelli stadium and has been training with the Burton squad. Speculation about offering Barker a position at Burton were further fuelled when his name appeared in the squad to face Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Nigel Clough commented when asked if he had signed Barker said "Not Yet". It is thought Barker may be offered a player/coach role at the club, playing only the lat ten minutes or so of games where Burton need to defend a lead or a point. The rest of the time Clough would untilise the vast experience of Barker on the training field, hoping he could give the younger players tips and advice on playing in the Championship.
